Letter from Vickie

Image

Congrats to Ellen Crocket, Susan Adler and Mike Vasquez on winning their re-elections. Joining us from Japan is Motoko Oizumi, whom some know was a prior Regional Director. Hisae, we will miss you and your wonderful laugh. Thank you for your service to TICA and this Board.

Wendy Klamm will join us from South Central. Cheryl, what can I say, you have given of your time so graciously and gotten us through Meet the Breeds, even with a smile - most of the time! LOL What many of you may not know is that Cheryl has proofed every monthly enewsletter, helped with every potential sponsor, wrangled breed descriptions for the website and our Meet the Breeds Visitor Guide, and helped with so many more of the things that make us "look good" to the public and our members. Cheryl has agreed to continue to head up Meet the Breeds for us (YEA) and continue to do whatever she can to help with any "special projects." Thanks so much, Cheryl.

From Europe South, with Genevieve's "retirement", Damien Bourreau will join us. The election was very, very close, with a strong write in candidate and two declared candidates. The votes were only one and two or 3 votes apart for the candidates. Thank you Genevieve for all your years of service and insight on the TICA Board.

Luis Paulo will represent South America, as you already know, and we'll miss you Carlos. You have been a great Board Member and helped push our thinking. We will miss you.

A Humane and Practical Gift for Cats

Image

Four years ago a Florida couple adopted a young cat that was terrified of having her paws handled. They resolved to rid their kitten of her fear of being hurt by designing Purrfect Claw Clipper.

This innovative product for trimming a cat's nails places emphasis on safety and avoiding unintended pain and bleeding. There is no need to guess where the quick starts, as a stainless steel guard allows only the damaging tip of the claw to be cut while protecting the quick. Read More

Cat fossils found in China reveal early days of feline domestication

Image

Discovery of the 5,300-year-old bones fills an enormous gap in experts' understanding of cat domestication, but the location is a surprise.

Archaeologists in China have unearthed the first clear evidence of cats living among humans as semi-domesticated mousers about 5,300 years ago, a heretofore missing link in the history of the world's most popular pet, experts say. Read More

'A-paws:' cat people vs. dog people

Image

Preferences for dogs or cats are reportedly revealing by personality, online studies show. Sixty-two percent of U.S. households have a pet, the American Pet Products Association said. Dogs are the most popular with 39 percent of U.S. households owning dogs. Preferences between a mutt like Spot or kitty named Fluffy can be telling.

A University of Texas study found those defining themselves as dog people are more extroverted, agreeable and conscientious than self-proclaimed cat people. Those with a preference for felines, on the other hand, are more creative, adventurous and prone to anxiety. Read More

Area Veterinarian Launches Pet Rescue Rx

Image

ELLICOTTVILLE — Animal shelters and rescue groups everywhere are struggling to make ends meet to house, treat and care for homeless animals. Through Pet Rescue Rx, an online pet pharmacy recently launched in Western New York, pets are put ahead of profits to help those organizations.

A dream became a reality for veterinarian Glenn Buckley and his brother, Scott, when they officially opened Pet Rescue Rx, in their hometown of Akron, on June 17. With a desire to help rescue animals, the Buckley family owns and operates the national mail order pharmacy that is accessible at petrescuerx.com. The online pharmacy is the brainchild of Glenn Buckley, DVM, a resident of Ellicottville, who serves as the company's CEO and is the owner of two emergency care veterinary hospitals in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
