LondonCats President Steven Meserve, Steven Corneille, Sue Hart-Jones and Hanne Cuyle
at the National Pet Show in Birmingham

TICA Breaks New Ground By Participating in Two
of the U.K.'s Largest Pet Expos

For the first time in the United Kingdom, TICA was represented at two of the country's largest pet expos - The Family Pet Show and The National Pet Show.

Both events took place as a result of LondonCats determination, persistence and negotiations over the course three years. While there were many hurdles to overcome, the biggest was convincing show organizers to work with TICA and stray from the tradition of working with the oldest cat organization in the U.K. and Ireland, The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF).

Manchester's Family Pet Show, held in the second largest city in the UK, is the only show in the U.K. where you can bring your pet. While this is a great draw for visitors, it created an obstacle for LondonCats to ensure the safety of participating felines. The club managed to turn the challenge into an opportunity by working with local fencing company ProtectaPet to provide high quality barriers.

Second obstacle, they were only allowed 2800 square feet of event space. However, through creative positioning they were able to produce three rings and benching for 100 cats. The show was fantastic and the visitors were blown away by the friendliness and overall professionalism from LondonCats. Event organizers were also shocked that the cats were able to draw a crowd of 15,000. As a result of LondonCats' success, they have been asked by show organizers to come back next year to a space double the size, which will allow them to host an agility ring.

The National Pet Show, held in Birmingham, is the oldest and most established Pet Expo in the U.K.  It is organized by the famous U.K veterinarian and host of the Supervet show, Noel Fitzpatrick of Fitz All Media.  After years of convincing, LondonCats was asked to join the show and given 1,500 square feet in The National Exhibition Centre (for those in the U.S., think Madison Square Garden). Once again, creative positioning came into play and the club was able to provide benching for 80 singles and utilized the walkway as a showcase.

To say the cats were a hit is quite an understatement. LondonCats were, by far, the biggest hit of the expo! The event drew a record number 25,000 visitors and the judging area created a bottleneck. Event organizers came by personally to thank club president Steven Meserve for "finally giving life to the CAT ZONE!"  As a result of the clubs' success, they have been asked to participate again next year in a space triple in size, with stadium style seating, bigger branding and fanfare as one of the headline attractions, alongside event owner Noel Fitzpatrick himself!

LondonCats' credits their success in partnering with and organizing two of the largest shows in the U.K to the region, the exhibitors that backed and supported LondonCats' efforts and most importantly the support and sponsorship from TICA and Dr. Elsey's.

Q.  I love to decorate for the holidays, but hate the  constant  worry  that my cat won't be able to resist all the glitz and glam of the season. How can I k eep my cat safe from holiday dangers?

A. Holidays are a wonderful time to celebrate, but it's important to remember that the shiny décor and tasty scents of the season can pose a danger to most cats. Follow these tips to kitty-proof your house this holiday:
  • If your family celebrates Hanukkah, make sure lit candles are never left unattended.
  • Holiday plants, such as mistletoe berries, lilies, English Ivy, holly leaves and berries, Christmas roses, narcissus, amaryllis bulbs and croton can upset your cats stomach or even result in death.
  • Tree water may contain pesticides, fertilizer and even aspirin or other chemicals. Keep tree water covered to prevent drinking.
  • Cats can damage trees by climbing them and potentially knocking them over. Secure your tree to a nearby wall with heavy fishing line or put the tree in a room that can easily be closed off.
  • Set glass or fragile ornaments out of your cats' reach.
  • Check for pine needles and fallen ornament hooks on a regular basis and remove as soon as possible.
  • Keep decorative lights out of your cats reach. To your cat, an extension cord or string lights might look like just another string for play.
  • Tinsel, ribbon and any thread, such as that used for cranberry or popcorn garlands, can pose a serious danger to your cat due to his barbed tongue that won't allow him to spit it out.
  • Decorate gifts with paper bows or thicker cloth ribbons. Use garland made from beads or thick cloth ribbons to decorate your tree and home.
  • Keep away from fragrances used in scented pine cones, garlands and wreaths, as these fragrances can be toxic to cats. Toxicity varies with each plant, but solid potpourri generally results in an upset stomach or even death.
  • Avoid foods toxic to cats, such as onions, chocolate and avocados. Also keep your cat away from rich, fatty or high sodium foods. Dairy products may cause diarrhea.
  • If you think your cat has consumed a poisonous food, contact your veterinarian or an animal poison center: ASPCA Poison Control (888) 426-4435 or the Pet Poison Hotline (800) 213-6680

An Update from the WINN Foundation

Thank you for your generosity!  Thanks to the numerous donors who embraced Giving Tuesday on November 28th, Winn will be able to fund exciting new studies on FIP, heart disease, amyloidosis, cancer, kidney disease, and many other feline medical issues in the coming year. We've also been excited to see many cat fanciers include WINN in their birthday celebrations on Facebook, encouraging others to donate in lieu of sending a birthday card or gift.

Grant Awards Announced: Five grants were awarded through the Miller Trust: investigating gabapentin dosing as a sedative in cats with chronic kidney disease, using biomarkers to diagnose reflux disease, evaluating the use of mesenchymal stem cells as a treatment for inflammatory bowel disease and chronic gingivostomatitis, and determining cortisol levels in hair and nails of cats to measure chronic stress. The cortisol study received our New Feline Investigator Grant Award established in memory of long-time Winn board member and legal advisor, Fred Jacobberger. Two Bria Fund-related projects were also approved: developing a combination antiviral therapy for the treatment of FIP and generating a novel potential FIP vaccine. An additional study was funded, thanks to an anonymous sponsor, to map fibrosis in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy by using non-invasive imaging (MRI).

Genetic Testing Project: Wisdom Health, TICA's partner in genetic testing services, has sponsored an exciting project by Dr. Leslie Lyons at the University of Missouri. While genetic testing for cats is now commonplace, most labs lack the standards and expertise to properly interpret their results. The goals of this Winn-funded grant are to provide DNA controls for all traits and diseases to the testing laboratories for quality control purposes and to provide a standardized template for reporting consistent and accurate results.

In total, almost $443,000 in grants have been funded by Winn in 2017. We cannot thank our supporters enough for making this happen!

Photo and Design Contests: Get in the holiday spirit early and participate in Winn's Best Holiday Cat Photo Contest!  Send a photo of your cat in a holiday setting and/or holiday attire to us.
